Some Friend That Is…

Anyone remember the Isuzu Amigo? If not, here’s a little picture to jog your memory.

For some reason, the Japanese thought it would be cool to create a convertible SUV that would compete with the American Beast, the Jeep Wrangler. In the 90’s, anything that seemed different was in so the Amigo was a go.

I’m guessing this car sold big on the West Coast and in Texas but in the Midwest and Northeast, I HARDLY saw any of these “Friends” cruising the streets. Why you may ask? Well, when you really think about it, you only have about 3-4 good months of convertible weather on this side of the country so buying a convertible as your primary car is definitely not a good look. Expect to blast the heat since those plastic/vinyl “roofs” have no kind of thermal efficiency.

Sometime last month, I’m on my ay to ACME when I see someone with an Amigo. First thing that caught my eye was “Wow, that car is still holding up”. However, after I went through that daze, I noticed the craziest thing. Let’s see if you can notice…

amigo

First, I blurred the license plates on the cars in the pictures so don’t think this is something from “The Ring” where now the cars that are blurred will somehow die (aka become totaled). The odd thing I’m referring to is how the roof is missing from the Amigo and if you look at the surroundings, you can guess that it’s cold as balls outside. You know, Amigo is Spanish for Friend so to me, what kind of friend will have you riding in the cold? For example, it’s about 23 degrees outside and you are in the backseat of your supposed friend’s car. Suddenly, he rolls down the back windows and locks them, then proceeds to the closest highway and does about 80mph, while you are in the back freezing to death. What kind of friend is that? Sounds more like a jerk to me.

I know people can only afford to drive what they can but when does the tolerance for uncomfortable driving end? I’m sorry, I’d be on the 1st bus to wherever I have to go, or I would find a REAL friend to come drive me to where I need to go becasue the friend I have just ain’t right.
